YUIZilla Compressor

After again spending time to fix issues resulting from a collision of the yuicompressor jar and the normal rhino jar in one of my projects, I came up with a more radical solution: 1. Download the source codes from yuicompressor and the corresponding rhino release 2. Replace every occurance of

Hybrid XML-Annotation-based Controllers in Spring

When talking to people about the Spring MVC, it became increasingly clear to me that many are thrilled by the possibilities of using annotation based controllers but are somewhat put off by auto discovery / auto-injecting. Luckily, it’s pretty easy to combine the power of annotation-based MVC Controller (extremely flexible

My media hub

I’ve been thinking about the idea of a small, low-power media pc for the living room for quite some time now. when I saw the eee box, I knew that I would like to try to build a system based on it. My plans are now entering the final

couchdb

Two new projects: svenson and jcouchdb

In my never ending fight against teh wind-mills, I have produced two new open source projects that are somehow connected to each other. First there is svenson which is a release of my own personal JSON generator / parser. The name is a result of a joke. When my boss asked

falling

The rhythm of falling things

Something that keeps coming back to me lately is the realization of how similar break beats are to hard things that fall to the ground. I bet you could go outside and record falling things and piece together the sounds so that each initial impact sound is another emphasis in

Comments, again

Seems like I fucked up the anonymous reply function somehow which always led to an (invisible) form validation error. My apology to all the people who tried to comment and couldn’t. I would restore the comments but my logs only show that people tried to comment and not what

spring

Spring Praxishandbuch

I’ve been working a lot with the Spring Framework again in the last year. Apart from lots of my work involving it and the JsServ Interceptor I wrote last weekend, another result of this is a book some people from my company wrote. It is about Spring and integrating

javascript

JsServ – Serverside Javascript and DOM emulation

I played around with some ideas about JavaScript on the server-side and came up with this little prototype. It’s a set a spring components that allow running the scripts in a website on the server side in case a user has no support for JavaScript or has disabled it.

Comments and SPAM

I did some work on the blog code so that you can now comment on posts without registering a user before. At first I tried allowing comments with only a user name and an email address, but faced SPAM comments very soon. Since I’m not really convinced that you

JSP

Creating JSP Layouts with Page Tags

For some time now I’ve been following a new approach when creating the basic layout structure for JSP based web applications. The new approach is based on JSP 2.0 tag files and changes the way that the single pages are build up from reusable parts. The most common

ffjs

ff javascript library 1.1 released

After some more work on it, I am proud to announce the version 1.1 of the ff javascript library. It includes various bug-fixes ( ff.dom.append , various Internet Explorer compatibility fixes especially in the DOM builder) and some more functions in ff.dom and ff.style. The ffjs documentation

Javascript Slim-Down

Modern javascript libraries tend to be fat. This increases the page load latency, wastes bandwidth and is a real problem for people with slower connections (There are still about 50% dialup users). So trying to slim things down comes almost naturally. In this article I will try to present two

Demo Video Archive

Back in the day when I was involved in the demo scene, I was a coder for Haujobb and did some demos / intros for the Amiga1200. Demos are realtime rendered multimedia art. Today most demos are coded in C or even C with some scripting engine, but back in the

Separate it!

One of the most important practices when developing complex web applications is to seperate them into different layers. This applies to the server side as well as to the client side of things. On the client side the separation usually is: * Content The content of the web application expressed in

Annotating DOM nodes with JSON

One problem when trying to do “The Right Thing ™” and separate your webdesign into different layers is what to do when you need additional information to transform your nicely id and class annotated DOM nodes into fancy, javascript-enabled goodness: Where do you store that information? How do you associate it

Dojo Javascript Compression and IE conditional compilation

I often use the dojo javascript compressor system which is a very nice way to reduce the site of larger js libs. It uses the Rhino javascript interpreter to reduce the size of all local variables and removes all unessecary spaces and comments — but most importantly it keeps the external

Storing hierarchical data in a database

When looking for a good way to store nested comments in a SQL database I stumbled upon the explanation of an algorithm called “modified preorder tree traversal” algorithm [2]. Instead of storing a parent-child relationship into the database and having to do one SQL query for every node, it allows
